If you’re hunting for secondhand Sézane, you’re in the right place, if you’ve spent any time on Vinted in the last couple of years, you’ll have noticed Sézane coming up constantly. It’s everywhere, it sells quickly, and it rarely goes cheap. There’s a reason for that.
Sézane is a French brand founded by Morgane Sézalory, built on the kind of effortless Parisian aesthetic that the internet has been obsessed with for years. Their knitwear in particular has a cult following, each style has its own name, its own character, and a waiting list the moment it drops. I came across it on Vinted and, like most people who encounter it, became immediately hooked. I now own two cardigans and two jumpers. I have no regrets.
What makes it worth buying
The quality is genuinely good. Sézane prioritises natural and sustainable fabrics and the majority of their pieces are made in Europe with additional production facilities in China. Their knitwear uses luxurious fibres, alpaca, mohair, wool, in combinations that feel considered rather than cost-cut. The colours are beautifully chosen and the range is generous. And that detail about each style having its own name and its own signature button? It matters more than you’d think. It makes each piece feel like something rather than just another jumper.
Where to find it secondhand
Vinted is your best starting point. Search “Sézane” and filter by your size. Stock turns over constantly. eBay is worth checking too, particularly for older styles. Vestiaire Collective has it at the higher end of the price range but authentication is more reliable there.
The fakes and how to spot them
Because Sézane is popular and holds its value, fakes have started appearing. I’ve been caught out twice, which is how I know what to look for.
1. The buttons
Each Sézane knitwear style has its own signature button, it’s one of the details that makes the brand distinctive. If the buttons look generic, mismatched, or slightly wrong for the style you’re buying, that’s a red flag. Look up the specific style name on the Sézane website and compare.
2. The label
Here’s a counterintuitive one. On genuine Sézane knitwear some labels sit slightly off centre, as the iconic Gaspard cardigan is designed to be reversible with buttons worn at front or back. On the fakes I bought, the label was straight and centred. If someone has gone to the trouble of faking Sézane they’ve assumed centred looks more professional. It doesn’t. Check the label placement against a genuine piece before you buy.
3. The care label
Sézane care labels have a particular style and include a serial number that contains production information including the date and country of manufacture. If the care label looks flimsy, poorly printed, or the serial number format looks wrong, be cautious.
4. Shrinkage
This one isn’t about fakes but it’s worth knowing. Sézane knitwear can shrink if it’s been washed incorrectly. If you can, try a genuine piece on in one of their stores before buying secondhand. Knowing your size in the brand is the best protection against buying something that’s already shrunk a size.
5. Fabric composition
Real Sézane knitwear uses quality natural fibres. Check the care label for fabric composition. If something claiming to be Sézane is listed as acrylic or polyester, walk away.
The short version
Sézane secondhand is absolutely worth pursuing. The quality justifies the effort and the prices on Vinted are significantly below retail. Just do your homework on the specific style before you buy, check the buttons and the label, and if in doubt, look it up on the Sézane website first. The real thing is worth finding, and remember if the price looks too good to be true, it usually is.
